Dave has practiced intellectual property law for over 22 years.

Following his graduation from law school, Dave served two years as a law clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

In 2015, Dave was recognized as a “formidable litigator” in IAM Patent 1000: The World’s Leading Patent Professionals, a guide that identifies the top patent practitioners around the world. Practitioners qualify for inclusion in IAM Patent 1000 based on positive feedback from their peers.

Dave has extensive experience in the litigation of intellectual property disputes, particularly those involving patents, trade secrets and unfair competition. Dave also has extensive experience in counseling clients on intellectual property matters. Dave has litigated patent and trade secret cases as lead counsel in a variety of technical areas including hemodialysis catheter technology; knee replacement technology; manual and power wheelchairs; sunscreen technology; floor, paver and turf underlayment systems; dielectric fluids for transformers and other electrical equipment; environmental remediation equipment; consumer electronics; industrial tools; glassware manufacturing systems; polyurethane rollers used in laser printing; tire pressure monitoring systems; sensors for measuring speed and distance; networked systems for 3D geospatial visualization; audio recognition technology; Internet-based coupon systems; Internet-based local search systems; and authoring tools for mobile device applications.

Over his career, Dave has achieved favorable judgments for his clients in numerous hearings and trials in federal courts throughout the United States.

Dave has negotiated license agreements, settlement agreements and commercial arrangements that have resulted in the payment of substantial royalties to his clients. For example, Dave was lead counsel for his client in a patent infringement suit involving vegetable oil-based dielectric fluids. Dave litigated claims for infringement through discovery and claim construction proceedings and, after obtaining favorable claim construction rulings, was able to negotiate a highly favorable settlement agreement.

Dave achieved similar results as lead counsel for a client in the field of sensor-based speed and distance measurement systems in a series of patent infringement suits against multiple large equipment and consumer electronics companies. Dave has negotiated and assisted in the negotiation of a series of highly favorable settlement and license agreements in industry-wide patent infringement litigation in the field of Internet-based searching technology, resulting in over $40 million in patent royalties for his client.
